I saw the video for absolution calling a few days ago. I am utterly disconnected from the artistic direction of today's Incubus. I am relieved that some of you like it because now I feel less embarrassed for the band.

Only because of the video or also because of the sound of the songs?

thats heavy. embarrassed for the band? i'd bet they don't want folks to invest too much emotion into their new, ridiculous, irreverent little music video. it seems like the music video was made with the idea that it would be a fun video to make... not that it would be important, theme-building moment or a referendum on how incubus are now or anything important whatsoever. its a video.

as long as the band are having fun, im cool. they seemed to have fun with this.

My problem with the video is that it feels like a band of 40 year olds trying to keep up with the kids and being 5 years behind the curve. I mean did we really need a hipster(i hate using that word) version of beat it?

They want to have fun, yes, that's correct. But videos are also about marketing.

They want to keep an audience and build an audience to continue to bring in profits.

Just like the rest of us... We gotta eat.

I don't think they have to worry too much about money, to be honest.

I am still posting on an Incubus message board in 2015...safe to say it is not because I hate them.

But that video is 100% embarrassing. It doesn't "matter" like it did in the TRL days but there are still a ton of people who go to youtube to listen to new music.

Let me put it this way...I wanted to send a link out to my friends who were fans back in the day but don't always keep on top of what the band is up to. I sent a link to the lyric vid, not the music vid.

My brother is a senior in college, around their target audience for the "hip" video. He is a long time fan, got him into into the band from the ground up. He thought it was cringe-worthy and not worth sharing.

A making of video - https://www.vessel.com/videos/b7SSEfxG9

Edit: Didn't realise it was directed by Brantley.

in 2015, a music video will not move the Incubus World Wide Popularity Meter one way or the other. That is a statement i believe to be 100% true. short of doing a collab-video with Rihanna & Kanye, there is nothing to be gained or lost in an Incubus music video in 2015. it's a bummer you guys didn't like it, tho. the word "embarrassed" couldn't have been further from my mind when i watched it! i liked it! opinions, afterall...

It's content. they need to generate content for the label. their decesions for making the video that they did have little to nothing to do with anyone's 400-level marketing classes.

I'd be inclined to agree with slammer there. I'm (at least briefly) bummed if anyone cringed at the video and then didn't want to share it, but it's important to remember: it's over for Incubus, at least insofar as being some force of popular culture or important cool-to-like band goes. That's not because they haven't made the right video or because there were some non-distorted songs on the last record; it's because the world has moved on. Oh well!

I think the last video I cringed at was Certain Shade of Green, maybe?

I think it's still possible with crossover successes like Wake Me Up. I think that's kinda what they were thinking with Absolution Calling. It's like a setup to show they can still be modern if they want and at least get them back in the public consciousness. Then when EP Side B comes out, they have a song on there that's the right kind of pop-rock, maybe more electronic that AC now that they eased us into it, and that could be a huge hit.
