2016 Releases

Postby torres » Fri May 13, 2016 3:46 pm

Dance Gavin Dance - Tree City Sessions
Image
• A live-in studio album in which they re-recorded 2 songs from each of their last full length records with their current lineup.
• Best post-hardcore band in the game right now!

Say Anything - I Don't Think It Is
Image
• Hardest rocking album they've put out since In Defense of the Genre.

Weezer - White Album
Image
• 20 years since Pinkerton, the band find themselves really hitting their stride right now.

Kaddisfy - Horses Galloping on Sailboats
Image
• Technically was released digitally in 2015 for people who ordered directly from the label, but the official "public" release wasn't until this February, so I'm counting it for 2016, hah.
• Former IOV favorite.

Honne - Warm On A Cold Night
Image
• British Electronic-Soul music
• Album doesn't get released until July, but 5 of the songs have already been released on a number of singles and EP's.

Deftones - Gore
Image
• Haven't given this album a listen yet.
• I read people were disappointed with the production.

Drake - Views
Image
• Just streaming this album right now!

Polyphia - Renaissance

An improvement from their first album, but still fell short of my expectations. I've listened to Nightmare several times prior to this album's release and thought the song would somehow reflected the rest of the album: more dynamic, cohesive songwriting. Instead the album only offered more of what they already did in the first album: over-indulgent guitar-centric instrumentals. I think the guitar virtuosos behind this band are too proud of their own talents for their own good. It's basically guitar wankage overload.

Just a single, no big deal.

Issues - Headspace

The screamer sometimes sounds like he's rapping and the band has moments that they sound like old Linkin Park (not in a good way). However, Tyler Carter r&b/pop vocal style (think Usher) on top of a post-hardcore leaning band really helps them stand out.

Rome Hero Foxes - For When You're Falling Backwards
Image
A mix of catchy and melodic emo, pop-punk, post-punk, post-hardcore, and indie-rock (Sorry, I'm not great at using genres to explain a band's sound). Recently signed to Kurt Travis' (former vocalist for Dance Gavin Dance and A Lot Like Birds) new label Esque Records.

Probably not the type of band I'd listen to on a regular basis. I enjoy bands with vocalists too much to spend a lot of time listening to instrumental acts. Still, not a bad record, and I enjoyed them live the last time I saw them a lot more than I did the first time.

First time hearing Issues. My god. I'm confused. I don't think the singer sounds anything like Usher - more Chris Brown, but hearing it mashed up with the proggy/djent instrumentation is confusing as hell.

2/3 the way through for me, so my list is a bit different, but here's my midseason list from early May

http://allmediareviews.blogspot.com/201 ... eason.html

Cloud Cult - The Seeker is still the best record I've heard thus far.

but since that update, stuff like

Fates Warning - Theories of Flight
The Monkees - Good Times!

are also in the mix.
