I can hear where you're coming from. I hear more 'Out From Under' than 'Clean'.

I still get a 'Morning View'- 'Under My Umbrella' vibe from that song more than anything else.

100% feel you on 'Under My Umbrella', keep hearing that in it too.

Hmm, I wonder if Trust Fall (Side B) will flow naturally from (Side A) or if it will sound like a totally separate release.

It will be cool if Trust Fall can be re-released as a stand-alone album.

It's the least ambitious, least conceptual and least progressive Incubus album to date. I don't hate it. Some of it is catchy. But it's a really obvious attempt reaching for a low bar to create a mainstream album with mass appeal. No risk. No bold statement.

They really should have held Trust Fall and Absolution Calling back to be on this album. There's 11 tracks with one instrumental and one interlude. So 9 real tracks. Could have used 2 more bangers.

And the mastering/audio quality is shit (just like the Trust Fall EP). Island Records sucks. The compression sounds awful. I hope the vinyl has a different master that sounds better. Sometimes we get lucky with that.

Also I ordered the wax for $30 with shipping, pissed that they moved back the release date. No download code. Emailed Universal to complain. No answer. It really shouldn't matter when the vinyl ships. Ridiculous that we wouldn't get a download code on release day.

Very true. The songwriting is good at times, bad at others, but it's all pretty safe. And that's where it all starts with a good or great record, songwriting.

I find it pretty funny to see a lot of people, especially on reddit, blaming everything that's wrong with the record on Skrillex. Yes, the mix is pretty bad and that's his doing. But they are also bashing a lot of the effects and claim that Loneliest is an obvious Skrillex-influence (even some reviews claim this), while I've read nowhere that Skrillex added effects - I think they are all Kilmore - and it's pretty obvious Loneliest was written before Skrillex came in the picture.

I feel like something like this has always been said about the band after every album they've released from Make Yourself onward. It might be worth digging up old album discussions to compare reactions. Difference now might be that fans can express their dislike for an album in a more sophisticated and well-informed manner without blatantly disrespecting them or passing harsh judgments on them as human beings. Back in '99 or '01, fans were quick to just call the band "sellouts".

Can't really be done with S.C.I.E.N.C.E though, because the band probably had no fans outside of Southern California during those days, and the internet wasn't really much of a thing.

I can pick apart 8 for not having songs as epic or adventurous as "Nebula", "The Warmth", "Just a Phase", "Sick Sad Little World", "Pendulous Threads", etc. I can point out the consistently simplistic lyrics on most of the choruses and bridges throughout the album. I can cast doubt as to whether most of these songs were performed collectively by the band prior to recording them, and that maybe the first time all 5 of them played the songs was only after the album was done and while they've begun rehearsing for their upcoming tour. I can worry over Jose, Kil, and Ben's diminishing roles within the band based on what I hear on the album. I can get slightly annoyed with the band's desire to continue being an "arena rock" band, and them intentionally making music that would help them maintain such a status within the industry. I can feel disappointed over the band's willingness to make certain compromises as artists.

Regardless of everything I can objectively assess with regards to the band after having followed their career for so long, they still make music that makes me happy, keeps me entertained, and inspires me. Even some of their alleged lackluster efforts are fascinating to listen to.

Admittedly, out of gratitude for them continuing as a band, I do not hold them to as high of a standard as I would have a decade ago. That's not me saying I don't think 8 is great, because it is in my book. I just can't get mad at them for not making an album that can make me feel the same way as when I first gravitated to them 15+ years ago.

Don't know if this is the best analogy, but it's kind of like how I felt watching The Office after Steve Carrell left the show. Sure, the show may not have been considered as good, but I still loved it and was happy they found a way to still keep it going without him for two more seasons. There were also a number of intriguing storylines and character developments they were able to explore without the Michael Scott character being around.

For now, the story of Incubus continues, and I'm looking forward to seeing where it goes from here.

Did they really promote the album much outside of the US?

Not hugely I guess - they've always been a funny one in the U.K. A lot of people know them and they have a huge fan base but they just don't chart well. We're all too busy listening to Ed Sheeran I suppose...

Man I love the ending of Familiar Faces. the part where brandon sings, "how many tries before we get it right?" There's just something about the way he sings that line that gets me every time and makes me hit repeat. i wonder why they didn't use that liine throughout the song? Such a fucking groove!!

It's the lazy 4 on the floor kick drum in the stanzas that gives off that vibe. I hated that part of Under My Umbrella as well.

I've posted this before, but I really hope this song is on Side B in some form or another. Reminds me of Priceless. https://www.instagram.com/p/x8DiKWIL9H/ ... iger&hl=en

I had a quirky idea for Side B today that I think would be really cool to hear. If the band did a redux of the song Trustfall. Switch up the cadence and tempo (hehe) and change the song into something totally different. Kind of like when Ben Kenney turned his song Not Today into Nutt Today. Same song, just performed differently.

And then three or four totally outrageous new songs :D

Finally! I've been racking my brain trying to think back to what all they posted while we thought side b was being worked on. Did you dig anything else up, friend?

Just listening to it, is there any chance that's an early version of Love in a time of surveillance?

Little game I came up with when board - match 8 songs to other Incubus albums if you had to. Full albums from Fungus onwards, no Enjoy or Trust Fall.

Disclaimer - some fit direct, some are awful approximations!

No Fun - Science
Nimble bastard - Science
State of the art - INNW
Glitterbomb - Light Grenades
Undefeated - INNW
Loneliest - INNW
WIBAM - Fungus
Familiar Faces - Light Grenades
Love in a time of surveillance - Crow
Make no sound - Crow
Throw out the map - Make Yourself

This is the only thing I can remember hearing from the Trust Fall Side A/B recording sessions that we haven't heard yet. I remember seeing a clip of Jose recording drums for Trust Fall, Brandon recording the chimes-like thing for the intro of Trust Fall, and that one clip I just posted, but other than that I can't recall.

Number one on Colombia's only rock station, it's a huge surprise.
