From my understanding, the pressure was having to sing 7 nights in a row. They haven't done that since maybe the early days and Brandon didnt think his voice could withstand it. That's why they cancelled the show on July 4th iirc.

I agree with the above comment that is would feel like false advertising if they don’t play the album in full. Either way this will be my 14th Incubus concert and I have heard every song off Make Yourself (including Crowded Elevator) live at some point except “When it Comes”. So I really Hope Houston gets that song. And I haven’t heard “Nowhere Fast” since Lollapalooza ‘03. Dying to hear that again too.

Let’s be real, they’ll likely play the album. I don’t think naming the tour and coming up with anniversary merch is the extent of plans to come.

Ah, okay, thanks for clarifying. At least I wasn't fabricating it completely! Haha

Did anyone go this morning? I’m thinking of getting their tomorrow at 1030....

Has the band ever said why crowded elevator wasn’t on the record? Did they know they would need a song for a soundtrack?

They might just play the full album, I mean that would.make sense. But I think it's a little.weird they are so ambigious about it.

Better than advertising it as the album front to back like Tricky did with his Maxinquaye tour, only to go rogue two or three songs in
-The band has not played at the troubadour since 1997 ...
concert listings here dont have a 1997 show listed, but dang... 1996 seems so recent like yesterday....

“11-29-1996 - Hollywood, CA - Troubadour
Set: Notes: The show featured Gavin (DJ Lyfe) as DJ, Kenny Morrison was shooting film for stuff that became parts of the video for "Take me To Your Leader", and (Brett Spivey) was the on-stage video VJ with live mixing to about four TV sets and a video projector, plus two Super8 film projectors that mostly worked. This was the most complicated stage setup in regards to gear for Incubus up to that time.”

That should have been fun! thought the band had more history at the Roxy, but the troubadour is also written on the band’s history.

Funny, recently i saw a live video from the band Silverchair on youtube and the opening act was Incubus and it was also at the troubadour. This was a couple of weeks later after the show brett talked about.

At the show now. Just overheard the bartender say that they're only playing a 45 minute set + Q&A. Theres definitely more than 100 people here, so it's a friends & family show.

Can you give any insight into the new song? Guitar driven? Vocals? Overall vibe? I wonder if it will surface on youtube

Show was a bit of a letdown in all honesty. It was obviously great seeing them in such an intimate venue but the setlist was garbage outside of the new song “Into the Summer” which was great (such an 80’s vibe). They’re advertising this as an intimate 20 Years of Make Yourself secret show and their most hardcore fans line up for hours and hours to get in, and they play the same few songs off it that are played at nearly every show. This was such a good opportunity to do something special or even play just a couple of the deeper cuts. They didn’t even play Consequence which they’ve been playing at the last few shows!

The q&a portion was cool - Nicole Alvarez from KROQ did it. She’s so great at these things since she’s such a big fan of the band herself. Brandon and Mike joked about being pressured into doing the anniversary tour, but it seemed like a half joking type deal especially from Mike. They didn’t even know that the LA show is on the ACTUAL anniversary of the album until Nicole mentioned it. Definitely makes me somewhat pessimistic about them playing the entire album. Crossing my fingers I’m wrong and they just haven’t rehearsed anything yet for a tour that’s months away, but it was a bummer to not hear one song off the album that isn’t regularly played at what was even on the marquee as “20 Years of Make Yourself & Beyond.”

Brandon sounded good as did the rest of the band, but damn the setlist really bummed me out. The experience itself over the last few days and making some new Incubus friends made up for it thankfully.

There were some great stories told - lots of people taking videos so I’m sure they’ll surface online. Looked like it was professionally recorded too. In regards to the new song, they said it’ll be out soon and were quite coy when it came to if this would be part of an album, EP, etc. Guess we’ll find out soon!

Thanks for the review. I wouldn't be too bummed about the set...the official tour doesn't kick off until September, plenty of time to work out things before then. Having said that I dont think they will do a start to back set of the album, just doesn't seem like them unfortunately. I'm still deciding whether to make the trek from Australia to LA for the show as I've seen them 14 times and plenty of make yourself songs previously...but if they do front to back I might definitely have to witness it. Also fingers cross the new song is good!!!

I'm sure some videos of it will show up soon on YouTube. But my impression: totally different Incubus. I honestly thought it was a Duran Duran/INXS cover of some sort. It even started with a birds/seguls with waves crashing on the beach sample. Definitely vocal driven and a super cool funky bassline from Ben. On the poppier side, and definitely single material. It's good, but it didn't really sound like Incubus. I guess we'll have to wait to hear the studio version to see how 80's it gets. An oddity from them for sure.

I do wish they played deep cuts, but it is what it is. Still glad I got to see them at a place like that.

They’ve just added a bunch of second shows for a few cities. Makes me think that they won’t play Make Yourself in its entirety. I see them playing the album in full in those back to back shows, but who knows for the single night shows.
