Re: Incubus Survivor: Trust Fall (Side A) (Round 1)

So tough! I really like this EP. It's like a photo of the band stepping over a creative divide with one foot in the past (Trust Fall, Absolution Calling) and one foot in the future (Make Out Party, Dance Like You're Dumb).

Went with Dance Like You're Dumb but I very much enjoy every song on it.

Re: IncubusHQ bundles and "8" vinyl

How is the sound on the vinyl? I can afford one vinyl at the moment and it's a toss-up between 8 and the new QOTSA. I'm leaning more towards QOTSA.

Re: Incubus Survivor: If Not Now, When? (FINAL)

As much as I'd like to see other songs in the final, this is still a tough choice. When Adolescents first came out I really liked it, especially Ben's grunty bass in the verses and the chilled-out breakdown, and it's aged well. When they did Live HQ and played the whole album I remember being absolu...

So be it. Switchblade is top three for me. I went for INNW again but it looks like Switchblade is on it's way out.

Re: Incubus Survivor: If Not Now, When? (Round 5)

Dang, I love Promises. I maintain it's superiority to my choice this round; If Not Now, When? It's a more well written song. INNW suffers from a similar problem to The Original in that it builds up nicely enough but going into the chorus it plateaus and doesn't resolve the tension satisfyingly enoug...

Re: Incubus Survivor: If Not Now, When? (Round 2)

I love how polarising this album is, so many differing opinions. I'm sad to see Friends and Lovers go first, I think it's a great track. Some of the best lyrics on the album and arguably the best guitar work. The Original is still the weakest track on the album for me. It actually sounds like it's r...

Re: Incubus Survivor: If Not Now, When? (Round 1)

I could talk all day about this album. Surprisingly I actually struggled with the first vote. There are so many of these songs I want to see do well here but I went with The Original. Saw it live on the album tour as the first encore song and it actually works well. The natural power the band has li...

Re: Incubus Survivor: Light Grenades (FINAL)

I'm excited for INNW. It's the band's most polarising effort by a long shot and there seems to be a splintered consensus over which songs are good and which are garbage. The song I want to get into at least the top three will be voted out first or second though!

Re: Incubus Survivor: Light Grenades (Round 9)

I went for Pendulous Threads this round. It was one of my favourites from the album for a long time but I'm trying to view these songs in the same light as Incubus seem to be focussing on their new work, namely; is it a good song? And I don't mean 'is it a good Incubus song?' I mean how does it stac...

Re: Currently Listening To...

I've had Kyuss blasting on the drive to work all this week. They were a no-go for a long time because of their association with a particular girl in my life, but now that I'm getting over her I can enjoy this marvellous music once more. As much as I enjoy Josh Homme's current approach to guitar play...

Re: Incubus Survivor: Light Grenades (Round 6)

Are you going to do a Survivor "All Stars" or something after you do 8? So we can find the most popular Incubus song? That would be so tough to vote on!

Re: Incubus Survivor: Light Grenades (Round 2)

I really don't understand the hate Diamonds and Coal gets. It's a great wee pop-rock ditty. Great beat, sweet vocal harmonies and killer bass from Benny Ken, and I really like the lead vocal melody, even if the lyrics are a bit wonky. All in all I think it's an underrated tune from the band. Not an ...

Re: Last movie seen

Paterson Damn I love Jim Jarmusch. I was a bit iffy about the concept of this film; a bus driver who writes poetry, but it was a fascinating watch. JJ has a real gift for capturing the little moments in life. Something as innocuous as bumping into an acquaintance in the street can be a major plot po...

Re: Incubus Survivor: A Crow Left of the Murder (round 12)

I haven't been following this, but it's interesting you guys rate Smile Lines so poorly. It's probably my favourite song on Crow. Ben's bass in the verse is superb, and the breakdown (the famous Incubus breakdown) where they "whoa, horsie" slow it right down to nothing then come back with ...

Re: Acoustic Tracks

You can add Make Yourself to that list. I didn't know there were studio recordings of ACSOG (the one on Monuments & Melodies is a radio recording I believe) or I Miss You. There are loads more, but I'd say they're mostly live or radio recordings. I'd love to hear an acoustic greatest hits too. A...

Re: Alcohol thread

I drink a lot of different alcohols. Beer. The old standby. Been loving dark beers lately. Luckily New Zealand has a thriving craft beer scene and almost all NZ hops are grown in the area I live in. Quite a few fresh hopped beers coming out at the moment. Rum. My god I love rum. I love slamming Krac...

Re: Last movie seen

Passengers I liked it. For once I'm okay with such a sweet, sugarcoated ending. I did not expect they'd tie all loose ends by the end of the movie and I feel like it was a conscious decision. It would've been such an easy decision to make a bittersweet ending if either of the characters had made th...

Re: '8' - Album discussion

I had a quirky idea for Side B today that I think would be really cool to hear. If the band did a redux of the song Trustfall. Switch up the cadence and tempo (hehe) and change the song into something totally different. Kind of like when Ben Kenney turned his song Not Today into Nutt Today. Same son...
